Submission to the Word.
(A Short Story)
To most people, their mothers are the most treasured persons in their lives but not so for Sumbola Dickson. Since she surrendered her life to Christ five years before now, her mother has become the only thorn in her flesh.

Sunmbo is a fair skinned, short and plumpy lady of twenty-six years. Although short in stature, her long black hair, right cheek dimple and charming smile are features that distinguish her in a room full of women. She works as an auditor at a Micro-Finance Bank across town and lives alone with her mother.

The relationship between Sumbo and her mum had always been strained but it became worse the night Sumbo came home from a service that James, her childhood friend had invited her for, and announced to her mum with so much joy that she has become a new creation.

Mama Sumbo believed that her daughter’s an ill-fated child whose birth brought untold hardship and sorrow into her life. She had gotten married to her high school sweetheart and they had been living happily until Sumbo was conceived, the day Mama Sumbo was planning on breaking the news of her pregnancy to her husband was the day the news of his sudden death was broken to her and since then, the story of her life had moved from bad to worse.

She blamed Sumbo for her inability to get another man who would have married her. To her, it’s her daughter’s fault that she was never able to complete her university education or get a well paying job. It was Sumbo’s bad luck that did not allow her win a Visa Lottery like her old friend, Chioma, who now lives in the US. It was also her daughter’s fault that despite Mama Sumbo’s numerous affairs with several men, she never conceived again. Or else, she would have eliminated Sumbo a long time ago.

Sumbo struggled to put herself through school with very little help from her mother. Nothing she did, not even her impeccable academic record could change her mother’s belief system. Both mother and daughter revelled in misery until Sumbo encountered Christ.

Sumbo’s ‘bad luck’ was something her mother had been able to stomach but the joy that now radiates through her is something she can never bring herself to live with. Misery loves company. She has since made it her life goal to frustrate Sumbo until she recants her decision to live for Christ.

Sumbo’s mother shouts on her, hurl curses and abuses at her, embarrasses her in public and yet the Lord kept telling Sumbola to not move out and to keep interceding for her.

For five years, it was as if Sumbo was passing through fire but she kept moving on. There were times she had even gotten apartments but at the point of payment she wouldn’t be able to ignore the nudges of the Spirit, she would excuse herself and break into tears as soon as the was alone. She prayed a lot and God’s word in Hebrews 10:36 kept coming to her.

Whenever she was angry or sad at her mother, she prayed. She prayed until the very thought of her mum signified for her a call to prayer, and she yielded every time.

One morning, during her prayer time, she sensed a shift in the Spirit. On getting to the office she met a letter on her table, she has been promoted and will now work at the Head Office. The offer came with an official apartment and a car. She was so excited and she thought of calling James, her forever friend, to share the good news. Just then, his call came in, asking her if she would be free for lunch. She decided to delay the good news till lunch.

As she walked into their private lunch place, there he was on one knee with some balloons and a bouquet of flowers asking her to marry him.

She was still singing praises to God as she unlocked the door of her mother’s apartment later that evening but nothing that had happened during the day prepared her for the scene before her as she stepped into the Living Room.

Her mum was sprawled on the floor with a bible opened out before her crying out for God to have mercy on her. Sumbola couldn’t believe her eyes. As soon as Mama Sumbo sighted her, she started pleading with her for her forgiveness as well. She forgave her mum, resumed her new job and in due time, got married and had her own children on which she poured so much love on.

She now regularly get together with her mother for Bible Studies and to catch up on life generally. She was happy she was patient through the fire, she wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Obedience to the Word of God is very important. You cannot ‘weaponize’ the word if you are not totally submitted to it. The word works only when we obey.

Using The Word as a Weapon.
Dorcas, a fair skinned woman of average height, had been diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) as a young lady and her doctor then had told her that it would be difficult for her to have children on her own. Over the years, before she got married, she had come to accept the diagnosis and had prepared her mind for assisted reproduction.

Some years after the diagnosis, Kelvin, a five feet seven dark and handsome young pastor came along into her life and proposed marriage. Dorcas informed Kelvin of her medical condition but he was unperturbed, fully convinced that the God who brought them together has the ability to override the report of doctors and give them their own children without stress.

Let’s fast-forward a bit.
Five years into the marriage, everything was working well. Kelvin and Dorcas were faithfully serving the Lord together, their businesses were flourishing and God was using them to bless a lot of lives. But they had no child yet.

Though Kelvin’s faith in God was still intact, Dorcas started giving in to the pressures. She started moving from pillar to post. Being a believer, she couldn’t go to any place diabolical but she visited every other place.

She visited every major hospital and fertility center people told her about. Though once in a while when she takes a little break to seek God’s face, she could feel God directing her to His word, but she just couldn’t sit still. She didn’t know how to ‘weaponise’ the word and fight to win with it.

For a couple of years, she toiled with no result, completely ignoring God’s clear instruction for her to sit with His word. She spent millions of naira moving in and out of the country, scheduling appointments with various gynecologists all over and trying out different assisted reproductive technology until she was totally spent and fagged out. She had finally gotten to the end of herself.

In this state of brokenness, she did what God had been instructing her to do for years. She picked up the Word.

Dorcas searched the Bible for every scripture that syncs with her situation, wrote them out, checked them in different versions until she received light. Then, she practically started taking daily dosages of the Word. It was no surprise for her when she was confirmed pregnant after a couple of years because she had come to learn from the Word, that faithful is He who has promised, who also will do it.

This is actually a true life story of a dear woman of God with just some fictional twists here and there. The truth is that no matter what you are currently going through, you can also ‘weaponize’ the word.(Hebrews 4:12) How? Search for God’s promises that relates to your situation and stay on them until your change comes.(Job 14:14). I await your testimony.

2 Corinthians 10:3-4
[3]We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do.
[4]We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.

Korean Parents consider the first birthday of a child a very important milestone in the child’s life. Because of the high death rate of children experienced in the past, every child who lives to see his or her first birthday is celebrated in grand style. This celebration is called “Dol” or “Doljanchi”.
The highlight of “Dolchanji” is a little but very important ceremony called “Doljabi”. It is a fortune telling custom.

During the “Doljabi”, the one year old child who is already gaily dressed in a hanbok(a traditional Korean wear) is placed before a table filled with several items like food, money, thread and in modern times, occupational items like a stethoscope, a gavel, books etc. Every item on the table represents something significant e.g. money stands for wealth, thread means long life, books signify smartness etc. and the child is encouraged to pick an item from the table.

The idea behind the “Doljabi” is that whatever item the child picks is a prediction of the kind of life the child will lead, a definition of what the child will become when he or she is older. So, it goes without saying that the parents expect nothing less from the child and they do all they can to ensure that the child toes the path of this first choice.

Definitely this tradition has its up-sides and down-sides but let’s for one moment forget about the “Doljanchi” and let’s talk about us.

All of us who have come into Christ also already have our lives laid out for us. The major difference is that unlike the Korean baby, we received the life of Christ fully aware of what we were doing. Yes, we might not have been exposed to all the Kingdom information and knowledge we have now laid hold of in Christ Jesus but at the point of Salvation we knew what we were doing. We consciously chose this Life. And this life is not a direction-less life.

Words have gone ahead of us. The scriptures is filled with information about who we are, what we are to do and Who we will become (2Corinthians 3:18). A lot of prophecies scattered through the scriptures, from the Old to the New testament just about us. Those words are waiting for us to do something with them.

Please, imagine the Korean child that picked a Stethoscope during his Doljabi but refuses to go to medical school when its time for college, choosing instead to sleep, wake up and play video games. Error in connection right?! Right.

Now, imagine a child of God like you and I with all the promises, doing nothing with the word, by the word or for the word. Do you think that we can fulfill our glorious destiny that way? So, what do we do? We must… (To be Continued)

1 Timothy 1:18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

The Blessing.

The Blessing.
Tade woke up exhausted and terrified. He’s a fair skinned five feet two inches guy with long thick dark locks of hair, courtesy of his religious background. Tade was considered by most people to be very good looking but right now, his good looks meant nothing to him.

He’d been having a series of scary dreams and nightmares every time he closed his eyes to sleep. Even if it was just a minute’s nap taken in the heat of the day, he always woke up with a start sweating profusely like a foam drenched with water.

He couldn’t remember the last time he had a refreshing sleep. He’d been having the strangest of dreams since ‘forever’.

On the Sunday of this week, he had seen himself on their Community’s Transformer stuck to the metal structure and struggling to free himself. He’d had the same dream everyday throughout the rest of the week only with a different ending on each day.

On Monday, as he was struggling to free himself from the Transformer, his hand had caught a red wire and he got electrocuted right on the spot.

On Tuesday, as soon as his hand caught the red wire, the force of the electricity flung him on a nearby express road while a seemingly brakeless Petrol Tanker was speeding towards him.

On Wednesday, instead of being flung on the express road, he had landed in the atlantic ocean running away from sharks… the bad dreams went on and on.

He’d seen masquerades, gnomes, headless creatures, missiles, snakes, asteroids, scorpions and many other weird things featuring in his dreams. Tade always woke up feeling miserable. His life is void of joy, peace, love and the satisfaction that only comes from knowing the Lord.

However, to Tade’s friends and business associates, Tade was a baller. Someone they envied and all aspire to be like. He was the 29 year old managing director of Steamfix Worldwide, a leading Engineering Company.

His father was the Founding manager and had since passed the Baton of steering the wheels of the company to Tade when his Doctor advised an early retirement as a solution to his never ending health challenges.

Tade rode the latest cars, bought two houses; one on Banana Island and the other at Lekki. He wasn’t married yet but could get almost any lady in Lagos to grace his bed in less than a minute’s notice.Tade’s constant international travels and tours were part of what made people consider him one of the richest young Nigerians in the business world.

Though Tade has many friends, he knows none of them were true friends. All except Henry. Henry, tall and dark with short hair, met Tade in River’s state during their NYSC service year and since then, he had never stopped regularly witnessing Jesus to Tade. Though the latter never listened because he thought Jesus was for poor homeless people.

One day, Henry invited Tade for a Business Men Luncheon organized by his fellowship. Here, Tade again heard the message of the Cross preached but as usual, he wasn’t interested when it was time to make a lifetime commitment to the Lord Jesus.

However, one question asked by the preacher stayed right on Tade’s mind, “Do you have the blessing?”

For days after the Luncheon, he pondered on the question in his heart. He couldn’t fix an answer. But after considering his bad dreams and the sharp contrast between his life and Henry’s, the answer became very glaringly clear. He didn’t have the blessing.

Yes, he had the houses, the cars, business associates and money spenders but he didn’t have the blessing. The blessing of God makes rich and adds no sorrow. The blessing is to be loved and forgiven by God. The blessing is to be saved and free. The blessing is to know the Lord Jesus. The blessing is to have him steering the wheel of one’s life. Do you have the blessing? You can call Jesus into your heart today. Pray with me: “Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me. Today, I accept your love invitation, come into my heart and be my Lord and savior. Thank you for this blessing in Jesus name. Amen.” Welcome home.

Our Very Present Help.

Our Very Present Help.
Adams did not know how he was going to survive the week. It was just Sunday evening and He already felt exhausted.

His professional exam was starting with four papers this week. He has two job interviews slated for Monday and Tuesday mornings. His mum is scheduled to have an operation on Wednesday and being the only child around, he has to be there for her in the hospital.

And as if all that was not enough, He still needs to raise his share of the hospital bill. That will mean he has to take on some work that will bring in money.

How would he be able to raise #250,000 within a few days? He wished his mum had informed him about the operation earlier, he would have been saving towards it. But the poor woman didn’t want to bother him, she had kept the news of her cancer diagnosis to herself until it was almost too late. Adams said a quick prayer for his mum.

Adams eyes rested on the center table in his living room and caught his red diary, he picked it up. An alarm went off in His mind as he remembered that he actually has two invites to minister God’s word during the week. One was at a Prayer retreat on Thursday evening, and the other was for him to minister at a Youth Conference on Saturday.

He dropped the diary as if it was some hot coal and sank into a nearby chair. He was simply overwhelmed.

How was He supposed to manage all these? He felt like hiding in a hole and coming out only after the week was done. He wished he could just hibernate himself somehow. Right at that moment, a scripture came to mind and he knew just what to do to scale through the week unscathed.

One interesting fact is that we all have times when we just feel like disappearing. It might be because of overwhelming responsibilities, work pressure, unreasonable expectations from people around us, emotional or psychological situations, being broke or just because our daily living has become a mere routine and things are just too normal and dry.

We all respond to situations like that in different ways. Crying, overworking, drinking or partying. Some (like me) try silly things like entering into a fictitious world. So, whenever I’m tired of being Toluwani, for whatever reason, I just pick up a novel and I switch into the world of the book, using fiction as an escape.

However, it is also interesting to note that none of these methods really works for long.

Whether you run away from your challenges using something strong like alcohol or mild like fiction, the palliative soon wears off.

The only enduring solution is to enlist the help of God for your situation. God is a very present help. Ever available, always ready to assist. If only you will call. His Angels will carry you and you won’t dash your foot against a stone.

If you are a child of God, that Help is presently near you. It is foolishness to be struggling to lift a big bowl of water when there is someone around who can place it on your head , or better still carry it for you. That person is Jesus, ask Him to help you now.
Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 46:2 Therefore will not we fear…

You Are Not Alone.

You Are Not Alone.
Abidemi woke up to find herself on a long deserted road. How did she get here? She must have sleep-walked there.

The last thing she remembered, she was in a car with a few of her folks on their way to Destiny town. What happened? She must have alighted before time. She couldn’t blame her folks for allowing her alight before time because she herself knows how strong-willed she was on a norm, let alone when she was in a drunken state.

Yes, she had been drinking on the way. All attempt to snatch the bottle of cares and worries off her hands were futile. How dare they? Did they understand what she was going through?

Her window seat in the car afforded her the opportunity to see what was going on in the world around her. She saw how it ought to be. She had seen how it is with other ladies her age. Why was her case different?

Of course, she is five feet three inches tall, a dream height for most. She is chocolate skinned and oval faced with a cute dimple on her right cheek. Most girls around also envy Abidemi for her double-decker diastema, a God given garnishing for an already lovely face. But that about does it.
Every other thing wasn’t working for her.

Her folks must be disappointed in her right now. She had chosen to be dumped in a street where there was no single soul in sight. Pitch black darkness, humid air, an eerie silence, this was it. An end she deserved for being so faithless and unyielding along the journey of life.

A dark voice whispered woes, her chest beat louder and louder still. She hung her head in shame, despite all she knew and has taught others about God and life, she was still going to die like men, on a dark and lonely road.

As if on a cue, there was a sharp lightning followed quickly by a clap of thunder. She raised her head a bit and thought she saw a slight light in the distance. She squinted her dark eyes and concentrated, yes! It was light.

She dragged her tired body forward and the light seem to come all the way closer to where she laid. The light grew in her eyes and the pair danced in glee to the light’s glorious rhythm.

She suddenly realized it! He was here all along! God never left her. He alighted with her when she did, though a poor decision, He didn’t condemn her because He has aforetime promised. And He never goes back on His Word. He is with you, even now.

Hebrews 13:5 (Amp)
Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] Trust Him.

A Short Story by Ayomide Bamidele.

Not again! Disappointment was all written over Margaret’s face. This will be the fifth time she was hearing this “ we will get back to you later”.

She felt disappointed, after two years of graduation she was still yet to secure a job.

Margaret was about to step out of the company’s premises when she heard the secretary’s voice behind her,
“Madam please wait, your attention is needed ma”.

She wondered what it could be, what was she called for? Was there any chance for her? Many thoughts kept going through her mind.

On getting to the Manager’s office she had just left, her face was filled with much curiosity to know what’s going on, she sat down quietly waiting for the Manager whose attention was on the file he was treating to attend to her again.

After some minutes, The long silence was broken. “ Am sorry for bringing you back here again” he said. You must be wondering what you were called for again. You know sometimes what life gives us is not what we really deserve,” the manager continued, “but you can get the best out of life through your own effort. You see, in order to get the best things in life you must use what you have to get what you need.”

Margaret tried to sit properly in order to decode what he was saying.

“Honestly speaking you are a beautiful lady, and you have all it takes to have this job”, He stood up to move towards her as he was talking.
“But in this life, nothing goes for nothing, you have to give something in order to get what you want. I’m sure you are not a kid, you should understand what I’m trying to say.”

Margaret was speechless, she felt totally disappointed again, what did he mean?, Nothing goes for nothing?
Margaret spoke out. “What does that mean sir?”

The manager laughed, “you should understand well, as he moved back to his seat. I’m sure you are not a kid, you should know what I’m talking about . You have to give me your body before you can get this job.”

“What!,” Margaret exclaimed. “Excuse me sir, what did you mean? what do you take me for sir?” she shouted. “I am a Christian, a believer, so how do you expect me to do such thing?”
She stood up to leave his office.

“In case you change your mind, I will text the address of the hotel to you, I got your number from the application letter you submitted. Let’s hook up this weekend”, He said as she was about to leave his office. She hissed as she slammed the door behind her.

“Lord why? Why all this?” she cried as she sits in her room. “I am sure of what I heard from you Lord, when I was about to finish from school, I am sure you told me that all will be well, you told me that a great job awaits me when am done. Why this Lord? why? she cried.

Suddenly her phone beeped, she picked it up and saw it was a message from the Manager, giving her the address of where they should meet. She burst into tears again.

She kept staring at the address on her phone, confused, wondering what to do. She thought about how she had waited on God for two good years, the pressure from her family, her sick mother lying on the hospital bed, her two younger sisters that have been out of school now for more than six months because the family couldn’t raise their fees.

“I am tired!” she shouted, desperate for a way out. “God, please help your baby, I am fainting” she cried with tears streaming down her face, and at that moment she literally felt the loving Arms of her saviour wrapped around her. Her face lit up with a smile and in her heart, she was sure, that everything was going to be all right. She deleted the text and blocked the strange number. She ain’t cheap because her Saviour, Jesus, paid His life.

Yes, it may look long, the journey may seem confusing, the promise may seem as if it isn’t for you any more.
But remember, that for those who wait upon the Lord, their strength shall be renewed, and those who trust in Him shall never be ashamed.
Your delay is never a denial. Also remember, that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose.
He understands what you are going through, He understands your plight, He is always with you. Don’t give your body for a few minutes of pleasure, don’t let the devil make use of that situation you are in to make you sin against God and your body. God is making a big plan for you, something worth being celebrated. Don’t give out yourself cheaply, because you are not cheap.

DON’T SELL YOURSELF CHEAP.

I sat gingerly at the edge of Ayo’s bed, wondering if it was a good idea to have visited him in his house. Ayo and I have been in a relationship for a few months and he had been pestering me to visit him. I knew he lived alone, and so I was reluctant to visit. I didn’t want things to get out of hand. Besides, I noticed Ayo had become too touchy and too clingy. A few days ago, he attempted to kiss me at an eatery.

‘Banke’, he said as I turned my face away. ‘Why are you doing this to me? I love you so much and I need to know that you love me too’.

‘How?’ I asked.

‘I want to have a feel of your body, Banke. I want to kiss you till you’re breathless. I want to show you what love feels like’.

I hesitated. ‘Ayo, we shouldn’t do this. I love you and you know it’.

‘Prove it, Baby. Prove it’.

Someone joined our table, interrupting our conversation.

Now, as I sat on Ayo’s bed, I could feel my heart warming up towards him.

‘Here’, he said, handing me a bottle of coke. He sat very close to me and put his hand across my shoulder.

‘Ayo, you’re sitting too close’, I said gently.

He turned my face towards his. ‘Banke, I’m burning inside. I want you. It’s been almost six months of our relationship. Haven’t I tried?’ He asked with a pitiable look on his face.
I looked away.

‘Banke, just this once. You say you love me. Prove it by allowing me touch you, hold you, kiss you and have you’.

‘Ayo, what if I get pregnant?’

‘You can’t get pregnant’, he said, bringing out a pack of condoms from his pocket.

I looked at him in surprise.

‘Ayo… I love you but…’
He kissed me gently on my lips, silencing me. My head screamed no but my body was too weak willed to resist him. Time stood still as the kiss deepened and I felt his hand on my buttocks. I sighed silently, shutting out the pang of guilt coursing through my conscience.

Dear Precious Lady,

You do not need to give your body to a man as a proof of your love to him.

You do not need to be entangled in the web of fornication and immorality to keep a man.

Any man who demands sex from you before marriage DOES NOT love you, and you have no business being with him.

Do not let emotions silence the voice of reason in your heart.

Do not let any man emotionally blackmail you into giving him your body.

You are bought with a price, so do not sell yourself cheap. Wear your crown like the Princess that you are, carry your head high and understand this: your price is far above rubies. DO NOT SELL YOURSELF CHEAP!

God’s Laws Are For Our Safety.

God’s Laws Are For Our Safety.

I recently watched this movie “An Encounter”, and I just want to share something I learnt.

There was this guy and a lady, both Christians by religion but neither had a personal relationship with Jesus… Yes, you got it… They weren’t born again.

The lady, though she wasn’t saved, had morals and she thought that was enough for a good life. She shunned her friend who was trying to reach out to her with the love of Christ.

The guy on the other hand, was a business person with some cash and he really showered love on this lady, giving her money, and telling her often how much he loved her. At a time, the guy even sponsored the medical treatment of the lady’s Father when he needed to be flown to India and the family didn’t have means, this guy made available five million naira to get the father treated.

Long story cut short, miraculously, the Lady got saved. She was sick, died for four hours but Jesus raised her and her life never remained the same. In obedience to the scriptural injunction not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, she tried preaching to this guy but he didn’t bulge, instead he got angry but the sister stood her ground that she couldn’t disobey God just to please him. She couldn’t hold on to the relationship, had to let him go. It wasn’t an easy decision for her, but she made it. The man shouted at her, almost beat her for being so ungrateful, after all he had done for her and her family. Sister cried but didn’t change her mind.

Sometime later, this brother got invited for a business meeting. It turned out to be a Gospel Business Meeting and Jesus encountered him. The next day, after he had surrendered to Jesus in a Pastor’s house. They started asking him questions. That was when he revealed that he had a wife and two kids abroad.

I was shocked! Like seriously, Sister Blessing, that’s the sister’s name, would never have known that she was getting married to a married man. But because she decided to obey God, howbe it painful, God spared her a married life built on deceit but beautifully wrapped like it’s love. I hope you get the message?

What does God’s law require of you right now too? Don’t try to outsmart God. The brother in the above story was so loving and caring that one would have expected her to go ahead with the notion of converting him later” (Please, note that, conversion is the work of the Holy Ghost, no human can save another). But she took the high road and she’s the better off for it.

Stay within the confines of God’s law, that’s where safety lies. There’s no way we can ever explain away God’s injunctions, it’s better to obey than to go our own way and later be sorry. Being wise in our own eyes can be really costly.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
